baby carrier backpack and all baby carriers

Probably since the dawn of time, mothers have kept their young near them during their daily tasks and their various activities. Historically, this has been done using a "cloth" or a long piece of cloth to secure the child to the parent.

Known in the more modern jargon as "baby carrier," and using new designs that seek to enhance traditional wraps, this method of parenting has become as natural and accepted as using a stroller.

There are five types of baby carriers:

  • The FRONDE
  • The flexible structure

This review focuses primarily on soft-shell envelopes and carriers (as well as a mei-tai type carrier) because we believe these are the best options for your comfort and the development and safety of your child. Here is a description of the five types of carriers that will help you choose your baby carrier.

Envelopes are pieces of thick tissue that envelop your body and your baby. Carrier wrap does not have clasps or rings and offers many different positions to hold your baby at different ages. The envelopes provide optimal support for the head, neck, back, and are also comfortable for the wearer because they distribute well the weight of your baby and there are no pressure points. However, there is a learning period to attach an envelope correctly, and it may take a little time to secure baby compared to other types of carriers. The fabric tends to be very long, and it is often difficult to prevent it from touching the floor during packaging.

The sling

Baby scarves are pieces of fabric that protrude over one of your shoulders and form a pouch to hold your baby in front of you. Harrow carriers have many pieces forming straps that have been used for centuries, but we cannot ignore safety concerns such as those cited in the CPSC warnings about choking hazards with slings.

Inspired by the deaths of 14 infants in scarves, twelve of which were less than four months old, the CPSC produced this 3-minute video, urging parents to exercise caution with baby straps:

Mei-Tai supports have four straps attached to the support body. These straps can be connected in a variety of configurations to carry your baby on the front, back or hip. The Mei-Tai style transporters are simple and easy to use to accommodate infants. However, many have little or no padding which can cause digging or pinching (especially in the shoulder area).

The flexible structure

The flexible structure conveyors are manufactured in the same way as a backpack. The different models are usually worn on the front, back or hip and are ideal for older babies and toddlers, although many have a baby insert that makes them compatible with newborns. They are easy to use, adjustable and ergonomic.

The backpack

Outdoor backpacks offer an integrated frame that allows you to carry your baby on your back. To use a frame baby carrier, your little one must be able to sit unaided (usually around 6 or 8 months). These types of carriers are best suited for travel, hiking and city use.

What baby carrier for what age?

Baby is finally here, and you want to take him everywhere with you, being as close as possible to him. An alternative to a bassinet or stroller, the baby carrier is practical, comfortable and space-saving and allows the child to feel safe, especially during the first months. How to choose it according to the baby's age? investigated for you.

Ventral or dorsal, several models of baby carriers are on the market. They are useful for walking but also at home, to continue your various activities ... without leaving the baby.

The baby carrier from 0 to 9 months

There are two types of baby carriers before nine months:

First baby carrier, the baby carrier, often called "nest bag" or "banana baby carrier." This method of the ventral port can be used from birth because the child is carried in the fetal position. Rocked by the movements and sounds of her mom's or dad's heart, the reclining baby feels safe and familiar, whether outdoors or indoors. This baby carrier is also useful as a support for breastfeeding and can serve as a bed, in the restaurant for example. In the opinion of many parents, it is essential to lull a baby inconsolable. From 6 months to 18 months, it becomes a convenient and space-saving side baby carrier. Braced against your hip, your child is gently cradled.

The baby carrier, also called kangaroo, is ideal for children under 8 kg. Beyond that, do not use it anymore, you risk suffering from the back. It allows you to carry your child in front of you for the first few months, up to about three months and facing the road when he begins to be awake because he enjoys being in touch with the outside world. Small footprint compared to the stroller, it can be used to make short trips or to move around the house, and to perform all the actions of everyday life: cooking (be careful though the risk of baby burns), phone, or even vacuuming!

The baby carrier from 9 to 24 months

Perfect relay after the ventral baby carrier, the back baby carrier. Bulkier, it places your child in your back. It is especially suitable for children over nine months who maintain their neck and back and can be used for children weighing up to 15 kg (about 24 months). The child appreciates contemplating the life that surrounds it from your shoulders, whether in the city, in the country, in the small paths where the stroller does not pass, even during a hike to the mountain. It also allows you to have your hands free when you are shopping. Children love this mode of transportation because they appreciate the closeness to their parent. Footrests are often integrated into the frame of the baby carrier; they allow to put your child on the ground gently. Past 24 months,

Named "scarf" also allows to carry children from 9 to 24 months, even 36 months. This mode of portage, very fashionable, offers the possibility of taking his child on the hip, but also in front and on the back.

Which baby carrier to hike and travel to choose?

When hiking with a toddler or baby, or when traveling out of town, in nature, it is sometimes difficult to travel with a stroller, and it is better to travel baby carrier or baby carrier. Even if you have the opportunity to take the 2, stroller AND baby carrier it is even better because they answer different issues.

Baby head frontal or back?

Turning to a front baby carrier or a backpack baby carrier will depend on the age of your child and use that you want to do. In fact, before your baby does not take proper sitting alone it is essential to make a front baby carrier, i.e., carry your child in front of you. Then, when he is sitting well, then you will be able to choose a backpack, so with your child in the back. It is very comfortable for everyone! Provided of course to appropriately adjust the backpack portage so that the weight of your child is well distributed on your back.
So we can say that in general a carrying backpack is used between 6 and 36 months of age (the end it depends mostly on the weight of your child because beyond 15 kg it becomes very hard for the parent carrier unless you're a great sportsman or a bodybuilder!)

Cost and quality of the baby carrier

We must pay attention to the quality of the baby carrier, especially during the first months of life of your child. The baby should be well maintained, and his head supported (so check the head restraints). The ventral baby carrier must be rigid enough to ensure proper support of the spine. Whatever the model, you have to try it with and without a baby before you buy it. Prefer machine washable models and exclude those that do not have an adjustable seat in the crotch. Finally, take a good look at whether the fastening systems are secure. It will also regularly check later that the straps and fabric are in excellent condition. It is better to choose a model that complies with the standards in force,

Average selling prices? For a ventral model, count from 35 to 120 $, for a baby carrier dorsal from 60 to 200 $ and for models "banana" from 30 to 80 $.
