Breast Milk Storage Guidelines : Storing your milk once you have pumped it is very simple. First, you need to decide how long you will be storing it. If you intend to feed the breast milk to your baby within about eight hours, you can pump it directly into the container from which you will feed her. The same might be true if you intend to use it within the week. Glass containers or hard plastics that do not contain Bisphenol-A (BPA) are your best bets. These are made to store breast milk. You will want to leave about 1 inch (2.5 cm) on the top to prevent spills because your milk will expand as it freezes.

If you intend to freeze your breast milk for more than a week, you might want to consider something less structured, such as unique breast milk storage bags. Plastic or glass containers, while they work, will take up much space and be rather costly if you decide to store anything more than a bottle or two. Special plastic bags are made for this purpose, although some mothers choose to use ice-cube–like trays with covers. No matter how you store your breast milk, you want to think ahead.

The Kiinde bags are high quality and easily fit onto my Medela pump. They can easily transfer to use for the daycare bottles the next day or put into the freezer for our growing milk stash. Our baby took immediately to the one-piece nipples, which we have found easy to clean each day in the back-and-forth to daycare. This is the coolest breast milk pumping system.

How much breast milk do you anticipate your baby will take at a feeding?

To prevent waste, store your breast milk in small increments. It is much better to heat up two small bags of breast milk and have your baby drink all of it than it is to heat up one large one and waste part of it.

Breast milk stores differently depending on where you put it:

  • Room temperature: four to eight hours (66–78°F, or 19–26°C)
  • Refrigerator: up to eight days (less than 39°F, or 3.9°C)
  • Freezer: six to twelve months (less than 4°F, or −16°C)

If the breast milk containers can be reused, you will want to wash them in hot, soapy water. Be sure to rinse them well, then air-dry them before use. Special drying racks are available, but you can also just leave them out on the counter to dry.

Warming breast milk

When it comes time to use your breast milk, you will need to be careful when heating it. Remember, breast milk is a living substance. You want to be careful to keep it in optimal shape. This means you should not use a microwave to heat the breast milk. Not only will a microwave kill some of the beneficial organisms, but it can also lead to hot pockets which can scald your baby.

The proper way to warm breast milk is more slowly. Let frozen or cooled breast milk come to room temperature. You can also warm it in a lukewarm bath of running water. Products are available to help you do this, but an extra-large cup and your sink typically work just as well.
