double stroller for infant and toddler: a complete guide
It’s hard to miss a double stroller with twins or kids of age to walk with your family. Double stroller “in line”, “side by side”, or even “evolutionary”, our test bench.
With twins or close-of-age children, but also if you are considering shared custody, you will need to invest in a double stroller for your trips. Before buying, it is better to ask the right questions to find the double strollers that will perfectly fit your daily needs; a double stroller is an investment (from 400 $).
Two main categories of double stroller
The existing double stroller models on the market are innumerable. However, to make it easier to choose a stroller for your twins or your children of similar ages, note that this type of equipment specifically designed for the well-being of young children and their parents includes two main categories:
- The duo strollers that have two seats, located side by side;
- Strollers in line or single file, whose seats are positioned one behind the other.
The first family of double strollers is more user-friendly: your little ones are placed side by side. This facilitates your actions and allows in particular to strengthen their complicity. But with this type of twin stroller, moving is not always easy, especially in a closed place. In the open air, however, you have all the space you need to walk your children freely.
The strollers for two rows are very practical: they sneak more easily into narrower places. However, the child in the back seat will not always have the best view unless they look at their sides. The best models are equipped with adjustable seats, which can be set face-to-face as needed.
Otherwise, depending on the model, the twin strollers are specially designed for outings in the city, where the trails are somewhat regular and flat, either for trips to the countryside or in a more natural environment, where the roads are often more difficult. These strollers are then also called sports strollers.
How to choose a double stroller
Mainly, there are three models: the “inline” (or “inline”) double strollers, on which the little passengers are installed one behind the other, the double strollers with seats positioned side by side and the single strollers convertible into double, the new trend.
When buying, make sure your stroller complies with European standards, i.e., EN-1888. Its comfort must be well adapted to its future small passengers. For twins from birth, prefer a double stroller with seats that fully elongate. If this is not the case, your stroller must be compatible with two gr 0+ car seats or two nacelles.
With larger babies, from 6 months of age, or close to maturity, reclining seats, independently of each other, will be enough if your children need to rest or take a nap.
Bulkier than a single stroller, A handlebar allows easy maneuvering in all circumstances, ditto if the stroller has three handles (not 2). If you like to border in the forest or the country, it is better to opt for big wheels and a sturdy chassis. A more compact model with small wheels will be ideal for urban use.
As always, we make sure that the harnesses are easily adjustable and lockable, a security issue.
A large basket will allow you to pack your diaper bags and diaper packs. Going with two babies for a walk is twice as much business (or almost).
The double strollers are relatively bulky even when folded (and yet oddly manufacturers have improved this feature for some years!). Make sure that your double stroller can fit in the trunk of your car or that it can park in the hall of your building without disturbing.

The role of the double stroller and its conditions of use have widened: there are twin strollers for twins, those for baby + infant, those of tandem type or with seats next to the ‘other. The different models each have advantages and disadvantages that we will list and list for you.
Factors to consider when choosing the best double stroller for your kids:
First of all, it is essential to keep in mind the exact type of double stroller you are looking for and that best suits your needs:
- Double tandem type stroller (seats one behind the other)
- Double stroller with side seats (stroller)
- “Sit and Stand” stroller (1 seat + platform for a child standing at the back of the stroller)
- Double stroller with integrated car seat
Double Tandem Stroller:
This is by design, the stroller the narrowest. This makes it the easiest to use to get through the doors (shops, car or closet) as well as to navigate in small spaces (store aisles or train for example). Disadvantages: children do not see each other, and the one in the back seat usually has insufficient visibility.
“Side by Side” Double Strollers:
These are the traditional version of the double stroller, with children sitting next to each other. This type of stroller is the widest and is ideal outdoors or on rough terrain. These strollers are very stable and offer the best visibility to children. However, in the city and tight spaces (department stores, public transport), the width of the stroller, as well as maneuverability, can quickly become a disadvantage.
“Sit and stand” double strollers:
This type of stroller is ideally suited to carry a baby and a toddler. The design allows the child to climb up and down the rear of the stroller alone without the help of an adult. Also the reduced weight of this stroller ranks among the lightest and most maneuverable double strollers. It is also easier to store, at home or during transport.
